Yes, it is rated suitable for saline and coastal environments. If you live near the ocean, we recommend cleaning the surface periodically to keep it in top condition.

The values refer to the eye bolt screwed all the way into sound, load-bearing wood. Degraded wood or partial grip will reduce holding strength: when in doubt, have the structure evaluated by a professional.

It comes down to three things, in order of importance.

  1. The first is the load acting on the anchor point, which varies with the size of the shade sail, the fabric, and wind exposure.
    As a general rule:
    the 10×100 (working load 330 lbs) is a good fit for shade sails up to about 11'10" per side, made with breathable shade fabric and installed in a sheltered spot;
    the 12×120 (working load 485 lbs) is the right choice for shade sails from around 13' per side and up, in exposed or windy areas, and whenever the sail is tensioned under significant force.
    Fabric is the most underestimated factor: a waterproof panel does not let wind pass through, so the load on the anchor point increases considerably. For this reason, with a waterproof shade sail it is advisable to go with the 12×120 even on medium-sized installations.

  2. The second factor is the beam. The 12×120 has an 80 mm thread and requires solid structural wood at least 4" deep in the driving direction. If the beam is narrow — a joist around 2½"–3" — the 10×100 driven all the way in holds better than a 12×120 that only partially engages: the rated load applies only when the full thread is embedded in the wood.

  3. The third is what needs to fit through the ring. If you plan to attach both a carabiner and a tensioner together, the 1" ring of the 12×120 works more comfortably than the 7/8" ring of the 10×100.

Yes: use a drill bit slightly smaller than the thread core diameter, to a depth roughly equal to the thread length. If you're unsure about the right bit size, our customer service team will point you in the right direction.

Drill a pilot hole into the beam, then screw in the eye bolt until the entire thread is embedded in the wood, with the ring oriented in the direction of pull.

Into load-bearing wood in good condition: beams, joists, and poles. Never into thin panels or deteriorated wood.

No: the wood thread is not designed for wall anchors. For brick and concrete surfaces, there are wall plates and anchoring solutions available in the product line, such as Landa.

Until the entire thread is engaged in the wood and the ring stays oriented toward the shade sail: that's how the load transfers into the structure.

After pre-drilling, you screw it in by hand; for the last few turns, you can use a bar inserted through the ring as a lever — without marking the surface.
